Farm fresh produce continues to be impacted by the severe drought conditions in Central Texas. Even with some spotty rainfall and cooler temperatures recently, the land continues to be dry.
Drought impact on the entire farm
Life on the farm means hard work and tough decisions. The tough spring and summer here in Troy with high temperatures and little to no rain forced me to evaluate every resource on the farm. Because of the drought, I chose to prioritize my cattle over produce. By thinking through drought impact and making a plan, I was able to keep my cattle safe.
Livestock are impacted by drought just as much as crop production. Fearing the pasture would get so dry the ducks would forget how to swim, I constantly monitored water levels in the tanks around our pasture. These tanks were originally built by my dad and continue to provide water for the cows today. As pasture forage became scarce, the cows were given hay and protein in the form of natural syrup licks to supplement their diet.
Will a fall garden be possible?
I am working to get my fall garden planned and planted. Farm fresh produce can be purchased separately or with a meat package. Fall produce includes:

- Potatoes
- Bell peppers
- Radishes
- Apples
- And more
I continue to monitor the weather and information from Bell County officials. With some rain and chemical-free homemade compost as fertilizer, I hope to offer farm fresh produce again this fall.

While we work to recover from the drought, Waste Not Farm is staying busy preparing, selling, and delivering other products to our customers. Orders are filled monthly on our long routes and twice each week locally.
