Can I buy direct from farmers

Should I buy direct from farmers?

Many people are searching for better nutrition, and want to support local businesses, but don’t know where to start. With overwhelming options and sometimes conflicting information, you may ask yourself, “can I buy direct from farmers?” The answer is yes! Local farms are closer than you think.

Did you know, family farms of varying sizes make up 98% of all farms in the U.S? Instead of paying more for lower quality, more people are buying meat and produce from local farmers.

Most people get their food through two different systems. Your food is either from the global industrial system or local system. Shortening the route from farm production to your table lengthens the freshness of your food and provides many benefits.

When and where can I buy local food?

Many communities host a local farmer’s market during specific seasons. Farmers markets are a good way to meet local producers and see what they have to offer. At a farmers market you are most likely to find:

  • Produce
  • Flowers
  • Jars and canned goods
  • Baked goods
  • Other small locally produced items

If you are interested in buying meat, you can purchase anything from a whole cow to specific cuts directly from a local farm like ours.

Why should I buy direct from farmers?

Sending cattle to a feedlot to be finished is often seen as inhumane. Feedlots require many antibiotics and chemicals to keep cows healthy enough to butcher. My cattle are grass fed in an open chemical-free pasture and never sent to a feedlot!

My cattle have almost 150 acres of pasture to freely roam and graze. They are given the best life before being humanely dispatched by a small local USDA inspected processor. Mass produced ground beef includes meat from multiple cows. When you buy meat directly from Waste Not Farm, it comes from one cow.

Humanely treated cows create better tasting and healthier meat. When you buy meat directly from a local farm you are saving money and supporting humane beef production.

Farmers markets are fun, and the grocery store is so convenient. Why should I buy direct from farmers? The food you buy from the grocery store travels a long way to get there. You don’t know where it came from and what happened along the way. Buying your food locally has a huge impact on many levels of society.
