Half a Cow

Should I buy half a cow?

Many families buy half a cow or another bulk option to save money. When you buy freezer beef in bulk it is a larger upfront investment but saves over time. The average freezer beef order costs less per pound, on average, than meat available at a grocery store. You also save time by reducing the number of trips to the store. Imagine going to the store and not having to worry about the cost of supermarket beef!

Beef production makes up over half of the top commodities from Texas. When you buy local beef, you are supporting local farmers in Texas. Here are some tips to consider when deciding to buy freezer beef in bulk from a local farm.

How much meat is half a cow

A 1,200 pound steer produces around 400 to 500 pounds of meat.  Buying a half cow package from Waste Not Farm is guaranteed to include at least 200 pounds of meat.Cut and meat options include:

  • Brisket
  • Chuck
  • Rib
  • Short Loin
  • Sirloin
  • Round
  • Skirt Steak
  • T-Bone
  • Ground Beef
  • Other options

At Waste Not Farm, we don’t leave anything to waste. In addition to meat, some orders include additional products such as marrow bones that can be used for marrow, bone broth, or dog bones.

Check your freezer space!

When deciding on what type of beef package to buy, it is important to consider two main factors:

  • Will I be able to use the amount of meat I am buying? Most freezer beef lasts between six and twelve months when stored properly.
  • Do I have enough freezer space to store the amount I am buying? The general rule for calculating needed freezer space is 50 pounds of meat takes up 2.25 cubic feet of space. Half a cow will easily fill eight cubic feet.

Buying freezer beef usually requires an additional freezer. It will not fit in your primary kitchen refrigerator/freezer combo. Once you have your storage figured out, it’s time to order your beef!
